Some of the objectives behind the Mauritius Data Protection Act 2017 as well as the EU General Protection Regulation (GDPR) are:

1. how personal data should be collected, stored and used,

2. for controllers and processors to live up to their responsibilities under the respective legislations when collecting, processing and safeguarding personal data or even reporting a breach, within tight deadlines, and

3. the granting of certain rights to data subjects to give and withdraw their consent as to how their personal data should be used.

Many organisations would now have within their midst a Data Protection Officer (DPO). A number of years, after coming into force of a legal framework to protect personal data, time is ripe for organisations to reflect on why and how having the right corporate culture around Personal Data Privacy is important not only from a personal privacy perspective but how building, maintaining and showcasing such a corporate culture could promote trust and growth of their businesses, especially when transfer of personal data is key for cross border businesses.
